Portrait of Benjamin Ferguson

Benjamin Ferguson

I am a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick and the director of Warwick's Philosophy, Politics, and Economics programme. Previously, I was a visiting faculty fellow at Tulane University’s Murphy Institute and I held positions in Philosophy at VU Amsterdam and the University of Bayreuth. My work focuses on moral and political philosophy, especially theories of exploitation, fairness, and the ethics of markets. My papers have been published in journals such as Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, The American Journal of Political Science, Economics & Philosophy, and Analysis. My research has been funded by the Dutch Research Council and the British Academy. You can find a list of my current projects and publications on my research page.

I have two current research projects. The first develops a comprehensive theory of exploitation. It examines what it is, why it is wrong, and how it should be addressed. I combine philosophical analysis with empirical research to explore how people apply the concept of exploitation across contexts such as labour, housing, and healthcare.

The second project examines the relationship between supererogation, moral reasons, and permissibility. It investigates how we can make sense of actions that are morally better than required yet still optional, and what this reveals about the structure of moral reasoning.
